If you are not a national from the European Economic Area (EEA), you need to ascertain whether or not you are a "Visa National".

Visit the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Website for details. Use the enquiry form, if you are not sure alternatively, get advice from your nearest British Diplomatic Post - LISTED HERE.

If you are a visa national student, you must obtain entry clearance in your home country, before you travel, in the form of a visa.

Non visa nationals who come to the UK to study are not required to obtain a visa before they travel to the UK.

You can however apply for entry clearance in the form of an "entry certificate" The advantages of obtaining prior entry clearance are as follows:

• If for any reason an Immigration Officer does not want to admit you on arrival, you will be able to remain in the UK while you appeal against the decision.
• If you are coming to study for less than 6 months you can ask the entry clearance officer in your country for conditions allowing you to take part time/vacation work, a sandwich course placement or an internship when you arrive.

If you wish to apply for entry clearance you need to complete the form IM2A, and any related forms as applicable.

They are available at the nearest British Embassy/High Commission and at the website as previously mentioned. You must allow plenty of time for this form to be processed.

You may be asked to attend an interview after submitting your application. Applications should be accompanied by:
• A valid Passport
• Two recent passport sized photographs.
• Non refundable entry clearance fee (paid in local currency)
• Relevant diplomas or educational certificates.
ff you want to visit the UK to compare different places of study and courses you will have to explain this clearly to the Immigration Officer at the port of entry.

You will be expected to provide evidence that you have made contact with Language Schools, Colleges and Universities in the UK (i.e. with letters inviting you to an interview).
