It
is important that you
recognize this will vary
according to where you
decide to study in the
UK. Studying in London
and other large Cities
may be more expensive
than other locations.You
can obtain from the
British Council Website
by
CLICKING HERE.
Also many of the
Educational Institutions
have a pre-arrival guide
for International
Students containing
information about the
cost of living, Travel,
accommodation etc. This
is normally sent out
when you have decided
where to study in the
UK.
You are strongly advised
to make sure you have
sufficient money to
cover all your expenses
whilst studying in the
UK, We recommend that
you do not bring large
amounts of cash, but
bring most of your money
as Travellers cheques.
Tuition fees should be
paid in advance to save
you carrying large
amounts of cash.
This can be done in
advance by Bank Transfer
BACS etc. Alternatively
bring a cheque or
Bankers Draft payable to
the chosen Educational
Institution.
As a student you should
carry enough money to
pay for living expenses,
be aware that if you are
opening a bank account
in the UK it can take up
to 7 working days. If
your accommodation is
pre-booked you will
still need living
expenses for items such
as food, telephone calls
travelling expenses,
social events etc around
£200-250 should be
sufficient in most parts
of the UK, although
slightly more in Major
Cities.
You cannot open a Bank
Account in the UK if you
have been here for less
than 6 months, but you
can open a very simple
account at the Post
Office. British Banks in
common with their
worldwide counterparts
have introduced new
rules and regulations.
Security Policies have
been implemented which
can lead to delays for
Foreign Students who try
to open an account. It
is very difficult to
open a UK Bank Account
whilst in your own
Country. The following
guidelines might make
the process easier
before you travel:
• Check with your Bank
before leaving home to
see if they have a
branch in the area where
you plan to study.
• Proof of UK address,
usually in the form of a
utility bill or Halls of
Residence or School or
your educational
establishment.
Each Bank makes an
independent decision as
to whether to accept new
customers or not.
Once in the UK you
should check with your
Educational Institution
or with other Students
in order to find out
which is the most
helpful Bank to try.
It is also important to
make sure that the Bank
you choose is close to
your accommodation or
place of study so that
you can finalize the
paperwork easily when
you arrive.
Banks are usually open
09:30 - 16:30 daily,
but are closed at
weekends and on Public
Holidays. Some Banks,
however, open on a
Saturday morning.
